Vintage Sideboards: Mid-Century, Teak and Antique Cabinets
The sideboard is the piece of furniture that reveals a style most quickly: the Danish teak sideboard with sliding doors, the Art Deco cabinet with high-gloss veneer, the Wilhelminian-era buffet made of oak. At Hauptstadt Möblerei, you can always find more than 100 vintage sideboards, from a narrow piece for the hallway to a long Mid-Century original for the living room. Refurbished in our Berlin workshop, with dimensions, photos and an honest description of its condition.
Mid-Century Sideboard: the Classic in Teak and Rosewood
The Mid-Century sideboard from the 1950s to the 1970s is the most sought-after piece in our range. Typical features: teak or rosewood, sliding doors or flaps, drawers with cutlery compartments inside, and slender tapered legs. Danish manufacturers such as Dyrlund, and German ones such as Lübke or WK. Learn more about the era in our Mid-Century.
Antique Sideboard: Cabinet, Buffet and Credenza
Before 1920, the sideboard was called cabinet, buffet or credenza: solid, with doors, drawers and often a marble top. Wilhelminian-era cabinets made of oak or walnut, Art Nouveau buffets with curved fittings, English sideboards made of mahogany in the Chippendale-style. These pieces are heavy, durable and become more valuable with each year. More pieces under Antiques.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sideboards
How long should a sideboard be?
As a rule of thumb: as long as the dining table or about two-thirds of the wall it stands against. As a TV unit, it can be somewhat longer than the screen. The dimensions are listed for each piece.
What is the difference between a sideboard, lowboard and highboard?
A lowboard is low and suitable as a TV unit, a sideboard is about hip height, and a highboard reaches chest height or higher.
How can I recognize a genuine Danish teak sideboard?
By solid wood edges, dovetail joints, a manufacturer's stamp or branding on the back panel, and teak veneer with continuous grain across all the doors.
Does a sideboard also work in the dining room?
That is where it originated: as a cabinet for dishes and glasses. It looks especially cohesive with matching dining tables and dining chairs from the same era.
