Warranty & Service

Insured delivery

Within Germany, your furniture is not delivered by an anonymous freight company but by our own drivers in our own truck – carefully packed and insured. In Berlin we carry it into your home; elsewhere in Germany we deliver to the curbside. If needed, the driver is happy to lend a hand. Deliveries to other European countries are handled by a freight company specialising in antiques, also insured.

Before delivery, we call you to arrange a 2-hour time window. Please provide your mobile number when ordering. Additional costs may apply for deliveries to islands.

Do you have a special delivery request? Feel free to contact us personally.

30-day return policy

You have a 30-day right of return: if you are not satisfied with your purchase, you can return the piece in unchanged condition within 30 days of receipt.

A short message is all it takes – on request, we will organise the return transport with our own drivers. We offset the transport costs against the refund, and you will promptly receive the remaining purchase price.

Stories

“You can see how much work went into restoring it. The armchair feels brand new, but it has retained the soul of its former self.”

Marina Gruz

I didn’t want an off-the-shelf piece of furniture, but something with a story. The armchair and the small table beside it turn an empty corner into the most beautiful spot in the apartment.

Eva-Maria Drewes

I didn’t want a plastic desk for my child. This one is 60 years old, and the chair with the green leather fits as though the two had always belonged together. The furniture will probably still be around for their children.

Bookshelves and Shelves: Vintage, Antique, and Solid Wood

A bookshelf made of solid wood ages differently from a particleboard shelf: It becomes more beautiful. At Hauptstadt Möblerei, you will always find several hundred vintage and antique shelves: the Wilhelminian-era bookshelf made of oak, the mid-century wall shelf made of teak, the English bookcase made of mahogany with glass doors, and the simple freestanding shelf from the 1960s. All pieces are refurbished in our Berlin workshop.

Shelves by design

  • Bookshelf and freestanding shelf: Open shelves, often adjustable. From the narrow shelf for the hallway to the floor-to-ceiling library.
  • Bookcase: Shelf with glass doors, protecting against dust. Particularly beautiful as an English Chippendale-bookcase made of mahogany.
  • Wall shelf and hanging shelf: Saves floor space. Mid-century wall systems made of teak are sought-after classics.
  • Corner shelf and étagère: For small rooms and as an eye-catcher in the living room.
  • Room-divider shelf: Usable from both sides, it separates the living and dining areas.

Vintage shelf, antique shelf, or mid-century?

Antique shelves from the Wilhelminian era and Art Nouveau are solid, usually made of oak or walnut, often with columns or carvings. English bookshelves made of mahogany have adjustable shelves and glass doors. Mid-century shelves made of teak or rosewood are light and slender, often as wall systems with ladders and attachable shelves. There are also industrial shelves made of steel and wood, as well as the vintage shelves of the 1970s. You can also find matching pieces under Mid Century, antiques and display cabinets.

What to look out for when buying

The shelves are what matter when it comes to shelving: Are they straight, can they hold books, can they be adjusted? We check this before a shelf goes online. Books are heavy, so we specify the dimensions and material for every piece.

View shelves in Berlin

In the showroom in Berlin-Lichtenberg , several hundred shelves are on display across 4,000 m², Mon-Thu and Sat from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., without an appointment. Photos from all sides, precise dimensions, and an honest condition description are provided for every piece.

Over 24,000 customers, 4.9 stars on Google and Trustpilot. We deliver throughout Germany, securely packaged and insured.

Frequently asked questions about shelves

How many books can an old bookshelf hold?

Solid wood shelves hold significantly more than modern particleboard shelves. The length of each shelf is decisive: The shorter it is, the more weight it can bear.

Does an antique shelf fit in a modern home?

A single Wilhelminian-era shelf in a bright room looks like a piece of furniture from a museum. Mid-century shelves fit in anywhere anyway.

What is the difference between a shelf and a display cabinet?

A shelf is open, while a display cabinet has glass doors. The bookcase is somewhere in between: shelves behind glass.

Which shelf goes with a desk?

The most harmonious choice is from the same era: a teak shelf with a mid-century desk, a mahogany bookcase with an English desk.
